The Invention of Hugo Cabret

The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick A fascinating book that basically invents a new genre. While it is influenced both by film and by graphic novels it is really a fusion of the picture book and the novel. Reading it is a fascinating experience because you are there at the birth of a new kind of art.

The weakness of the book is the story which is not complex and rich enough to sustain the length. The characters are OK, but it is possible to push a bit more even in a work meant for children.

In the end, the quality of the prose and the story cannot sustain the length although the art and its use is excellent. Hopefully points ahead to a new genre.

Will probably end up being most important for what it hopefully gives birth to and not what it is in itself.
