Probably the best book written in the 20th century. The book is more than just a critique of Stalinism. It is a work where the very nature of human oppression is explored. Fully realizing that this means human freedom and the point of human existence must also be explored it enters into these areas as well. It is a kind of handbook to all domination, showing how it works in general and what its affects are. There is a kind of revulsion with what domination and oppression actually are and how they work. There is a sensitivity and the love of the human, without turning away from the terrible things that human's can do. There is an understanding of how systems, societies and language shape and are shaped by human beings. It is all very moving and very real, and because of Orwell's life experiences, he just knows of what he writes.
Must read for everybody.
