A good novel, but Chandler is not as good a writer as Hammett. In the end it is an excellent detective story and piece of noir, but it does not have the depth that is sometimes attributed to it. There is not the rawness of pain and the sense of futile struggle that Hammett took from Hemingway.
Fundamentally Chandler is just entertainment, and shouldn't be taken quite so seriously as he sometimes is. For pulpy entertainment, I would prefer someone like Burroughs or Howard and I think Chandler is someone more like that who the literati have decided is respectable.
