Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - J.K. Rowling, Mary GrandPré The second in the Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter books, at least so far are a kind of blend of Roald Dahl's whimsical surrealism with an adventure story set in a Fantasy Setting. I am still not entirely sure why they are as popular as they are, but I decided to read on and go at least as far as the third book. It's my understanding that the fourth, fifth and sixth are considered the best.

This one is in many ways a rehash of the first one. It avoids the maudlin sentimentality of the first and is amusing and inventive. It, however, is very safe. I think that in the end the book is just really an escapist adventure book for kids with some surreal humour. Even though the characters have become iconic, they are very shallowly drawn. I intend to read on, and certainly the book is not bad, but I still don't really see what all the fuss is all about.
